Service is Our Prayer

We have a wide variety of service opportunities! Whether you have a minute on Sunday, a few hours once a year, or an hour a week, we have a way for you to work with us to bloom in service to the wider world. Our regular service projects include…

Amnesty International Write for Rights

Every December, we work with our local chapter of Amnesty International and participate in AI’s Write for Rights. It’s AI’s single largest campaign, in which folks like us write letters on behalf of people in need of urgent assistance. Over the years we’ve written hundreds of letters in support of journalists, educators, activists, and other human rights defenders from all over the world.

Beach Cleanup

WHUUF always sends a big group to participate in SOLVE’s annual spring beach cleanup at the Oregon coast. Cleaning up litter and marine debris not only makes our beaches nicer places to visit, it also protects animals that all too often mistake litter for food. This family-friendly event offers a great chance to get outdoors and do good. Plus, you get the satisfaction of seeing the immediate impact of your efforts!

Care Choir

Care Choir practice is in the sanctuary from 7:00-8:30pm on scheduled Thursdays. We will be practicing small group, familiar songs that will bring a little music and joy to members of our community who are ill, isolated or in need of a visit. Please RSVP.

Coat Drive for Western Farm Workers

We have a longstanding relationship with Western Farm Workers. One of the ways we support them is an annual coat drive. Each fall we collect new and gently used coats in all sizes, for all genders, to help our friends stay warm. Keep an eye out for the donation box!

Donate the Basket

Every few months, we choose a local organization doing great work in alignment with our UU values. Then we donate the proceeds of our Sunday offering baskets. In the last few years we’ve raised thousands for Oregon Justice Resource Center, Defensa de la Dignidad, Sexual and Gender Minority Youth Resource CenterRed Lodge Transition Services, and more!

Free Food Market in Beaverton

Aloha-Huber Park K-8 School works with the Oregon Food Bank to host a Free Food Market the second Tuesday of every month, summers included. Each market day they need 3 or 4 volunteers between the hours of 7:00 am and 9:00 am. The volunteers help set up and take down the tables, repackage bulk produce, and restock the tables when the market is open. Volunteers need to register with the Beaverton School District, agree to a quick background check, and upload a picture of their vaccination card. Giving Tree

Christmas tree with different colored ornaments with the wishes of kids in needEvery year during the winter holidays, we host a giving tree to collect gifts for the children of Western Farm Workers members. Last year our donations fulfilled the Christmas wishes of more than 40 kids! It’s easy to participate. Starting in November, keep an eye out for the tree to go up in the entry way. Choose a tag with the Christmas wish you’d like to fulfill and give a kid a happy holiday!

Barrel containing a sign that says two cans to fight hungerFood Donations

Portland is such an expensive area to live in – and it’s getting more expensive all the time. About 20% of Oregonians experience food insecurity. That’s almost 850,000 people, almost 200,000 of whom are children. That’s why we ask people to bring nonperishable food items to services with them every week. We take donations to Neighborhood House, our local food pantry. Look for the collection box in the entryway!

2-Minute Actions

The Social Justice Steering Committee regularly shares 2-Minute Actions in our weekly newsletter, the E-Blast. Each offers a quick, meaningful action you can take to help build a more just and compassionate world.
